VFL and development coach, Craig McRae provides a summary of how the Tigers’ players performed in last Sunday’s Round 6 win over North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium.
Anthony Miles
36 disposals, two goals, 10 clearances and four tackles
“Anthony Miles continues his great form at VFL level. He got close to 40 disposals, nine clearances and ended up kicking two goals as well. It was quite the complete game and he’s really playing above the level.”
Liam Baker
23 disposals, 12 handball receives, six tackles, five clearances and one goal
“Liam Baker’s another who’s in really good form. He played as a mid-forward and he had over 20 disposals as well as kicking a goal and setting up many others with his great skill going inside-50.”
Brandon Ellis
20 disposals, 15 handball receives and three tackles
“Brandon Ellis played limited minutes due to being a carry-over for the AFL. He had another week where he showed he’s above the level. He’s just waiting for an opportunity, he got mid-20 disposals, but it was his handball receives that were really pleasing, and it was nice to see him get involved in our ball movement.”
Corey Ellis
22 disposals, 15 contested possessions, nine clearances (six centre clearances)
“Corey Ellis was back through the midfield after playing a couple of weeks down back. He really set the scene early in the first quarter, particularly when he got four centre-bounce clearances and really set the game up. He finished the game with mid-20s (disposals) and a goal.”
Connor Menadue
20 disposals, 11 handball receives, five rebound-50s and four inside-50s
“Connor Menadue continues his great form, having 20 disposals as a half-back, setting up many avenues through rebound-50s but also getting the ball inside 50 as well. Presenting some scoring opportunities with his ball use. He’s in great form.”
Callum Moore
14 disposals, four inside-50s and three tackles
“Callum Moore won a lot of the football, he didn’t mark the ball as much as in recent weeks. He only had three marks, but he’s turning up to contests really well, which is great for him.”
Tyson Stengle
14 disposals, 10 contested possessions, four inside-50s, three tackles and three goals
“Tyson Stengle’s one of our consistent and best players, he’s really looking for an AFL opportunity. He kicked another three goals and another week where he hasn’t been tackled. He hasn’t been tackled in two years now.”
Shai Bolton
11 disposals, eight uncontested possessions and two goals
“Shai Bolton started on the wing and had little bits through the forward-line and played both positions throughout the game. He kicked two goals from crumbs in the goal-square from putting pressure on, which is a feature of his.”
Noah Balta
12 disposals, four marks, three tackles and one goal
“Noah Balta played as a key back and a key forward, we’re trying to develop him in both areas. His impact in the air was a feature, but also his ability at ground level to turn up. He kicked a nice goal from a set-shot.”
Patrick Naish
13 disposals, two tackles and three inside-50s
”Patrick Naish, half-back, developing himself as a defender, with the ability to go through the wings. He gives us run-and-carry and setting up off half-back, particularly through centre bounces, which was a highlight.”
Ivan Soldo
12 disposals, 30 hit-outs, eight clearances and four rebound-50s
“Ivan Soldo played against (Braydon) Preuss, which was a really good battle. Two of the best ruckmen in the competition, going head-to-head and we thought that Ivan won that battle and he’s looking really big and strong and really looking like an AFL player.”
Ryan Garthwaite
Seven disposals, three handball receives and two tackles
“Ryan Garthwaite has been a standout key defender of the competition this year and he showed that again. He’s really hard to play on, he didn’t concede any goals, but also his rebound and his aerial contests are standing out.”
Mabior Chol
Six disposals, 12 hit-outs and five tackles
“Mabior Chol played key forward and went into the ruck. He didn’t impact the scoreboard and didn’t have much impact in the air, but his follow-up stuff is something we’re working on and something we saw.”
Ben Miller
Seven disposals and three marks
“Ben Miller playing as a key defender had low disposals but was really hard to play on and his man didn’t impact the game.”
Brandon Wood
24 disposals, four goals, eight marks, six clearances and seven inside-50s
“Brandon Wood’s having a great season and he continued his really good form as a midfielder, but also forward. He kicked four goals as a key forward for us. He’s a really versatile player and has been an important player in our team for a while now.”
Charlie Thompson
22 disposals, 12 handball receives and three clearances
“Charlie Thompson played his first game as our 23rd player as an inside-mid. He had close to 25 disposals and the way he presented himself at the contest was really strong. It was an exciting start for his first game.”
James Fletcher
19 disposals, 10 handball receives and four tackles
“James Fletcher played his first game for the season after being an integral part of last year. He’s a really good role player for us, he’s fit, strong and uses the ball really well. He played across half-back and I really liked his game, his tackling was a feature.”
Shaun Mannagh
19 disposals, three goals, six marks, four rebound-50s and four inside-50s
“Shaun Mannagh is another who played his first game, 19 disposals, but the real feature of his game was his three goals. He kicked two in the last quarter, which were a couple of really nice goals from the wing. He’s a nice player for us.”
Tom Silvestro
16 disposals, one goal, eight handball receives and five tackles
“Tom Silvestro for the second week in a row has impacted the scoreboard from the wing. He’s a very hard-working player for us, important in our team defense and it was a really good performance from him.”
Blake Grewar
15 disposals, nine handball receives and two tackles
“Blake Grewar played mainly as a forward, went through the midfield late. He’s a role player, set-up scoring opportunities. He didn’t kick on himself this week, but was around the contest well.”
Jacob Ballard
10 disposals, one goal and three tackles
“Jacob Ballard played as a forward and a little bit through the midfield. He kicked a nice goal, which the team really valued in the third quarter and everyone got around him, which shows how much we value and appreciate having him in our team.”
Jake Aarts
10 disposals, two goals, four marks and four tackles
“Jake Aarts is a tough guy, who plays his role week-in and week-out. Unfortunately, he hurt his shoulder and didn’t play the last quarter. His two goals when the game was there to be won and his pressure is something we really appreciate.”
Steve Morris
10 disposals, three marks, four tackles, three inside-50s and three rebound-50s
“Steve Morris leads from the front, he tackled hard around the ball and his organisation and his pressure is a real feature for our team.”
