Powerhouse Richmond midfielder Dustin Martin has moved into equal ninth place in the prestigious AFL Coaches Association’s Player of the Year award after a perfect score in Round 10.
Martin, who received the maximum 10 votes for his dominant display in last Saturday night’s ‘Dreamtime at the ‘G’ clash with Essendon, now has a total of 36 votes this season – 13 behind the leader, Sydney star Dan Hannebery (on 49).
Rival coaches Damien Hardwick (Richmond) and John Worsfold (Essendon) concurred with the opinion of the judging panel at the Dreamtime game, which rewarded Martin with the Yiooken Award for being best afield on Saturday night.
Martin finished with a career-high 38 disposals, including a game-high 15 contested possessions, an equal game-high nine score involvements, an equal game-high six inside-50s, seven clearances, plus 10 marks.
Three Tigers – Brett Deledio, Shane Edwards and Shaun Grigg – polled four votes apiece.
Deledio had 23 disposals, including an equal game-high nine score involvements, took seven marks and kicked an equal game-high three goals.
Edwards had 26 disposals, including nine contested possessions, seven score involvements, four clearances and a total of 398 metres gained.
Grigg had 23 disposals, including 11 contested possessions, a team-high eight clearances, six score involvements, five inside-50s, two goals and 373 metres gained.
The other Richmond player to pick up Round 10 coaches votes was captain Trent Cotchin, who was given three after a performance that netted him 29 disposals, including 10 contested possessions, five clearances, five score involvements, four inside-50s, two goals and a team-high 452 metres gained.
