Richmond’s VFL squad has fallen three points short in their Round 5 clash with Collingwood on Sunday afternoon at the ME Centre.

Despite a goal surge by the Tigers in the third quarter, an inability to convert early proved costly.

In a tense final quarter, Richmond held the lead at various stages, but fell agonisingly short at the final siren.

Despite the loss, Matt McDonough was excellent around contests and provided a much-needed avenue to goal.

He collected 30 touches (19 contested), and managed to push forward to kick three goals.

Sam Lloyd and Nathan Gordon were equally important offensively, kicking two goals each.

Matt Thomas demonstrated his importance around stoppages with an outstanding performance.

Of his 28 touches, Thomas won seven clearances and had a game-high 16 tackles.

After a stagnant start, Richmond’s first goal for the day came through a long goal from Gerard Gleeson.

The Tigers went on to kick another, but four quick goals from Collingwood saw them take a 16-point lead into quarter time.

Collingwood kicked away in the second quarter but the Tigers responded in the second half, holding the Magpies to just one goal in the third quarter.

But with the lead changing hands several times in the final quarter, the Tigers couldn’t match the fast-finishing Collingwood outfit.

Richmond faces the Casey Scorpions next Saturday night at Casey Fields.
