Talented Tiger ‘tall’ Ben Griffiths produced his best game of the season and, arguably, of his five-year league career, in last Friday night’s stirring 18-point victory over Essendon at the MCG.
Griffiths took a career-high eight marks and had a season-high 15 disposals in his combined forward-ruckman role.
The athletic, long-kicking 200cm replacement for Ty Vickery, who is serving a four-match suspension, caused problems for the Bombers’ defence, and also provided Ivan Maric with a decent ‘chop-out’ in the ruck.
“I came into the game just basing myself . . . I knew I had to work hard and go from there. Just simplify things and play footy. I think that’s what I did, and I made an impact,” Griffiths told ‘Roar Vision’ post-game.
“I needed to get back to playing footy. I became a little bit too robotic . . . I have to simplify things a bit, and I’m doing that really well at the moment.”
Griffiths, who was Richmond’s second selection in the 2009 AFL National Draft, made his senior debut with the Tigers in 2010, but last Friday night’s match was just his 30th at the game’s highest level.
The 11 games he’s played this year is the most he’s managed in a league season so far.
