If the Tigers need more motivation for this Friday night’s clash with Essendon, the Clash of the Sash match is also a celebration of one of the most revered aspects of being a Tiger – the jumper.
2014 marks 100 years since the Tigers started wearing their iconic black jumper, with its distinguished yellow sash, which today runs across the hearts of each Richmond player.
The Tigers entered the then Victorian Football League competition in 1908, wearing yellow and black stripes.
Two years later (1910), the Club adopted a black jumper with a yellow band across the chest. This remained until 1914, when the band was replaced with a yellow sash.

From 1914 – 1918 players were given a plain black jumper, and sewed their sashes on themselves. This meant a mix of left and right sashes out on the field, until 1918 when the club decided to have all sashes running from the left shoulder - and it has remained that way since.
To mark the occasion, this Friday night Richmond players will wear a commemorative guernsey, when they do battle with the Bombers.
The guernsey will feature the name of every senior Richmond player to ever pull on the jumper in the last hundred years, on the black body of the guernsey, and the sash will feature the names of selected members and supporters who purchased the opportunity to have their name printed on the jumper.
All proceeds from the purchases of the jumper were donated to the Fighting Tiger Fund, to support Richmond’s VFL program and the development of its emerging talent. If you’d like to support the Fighting Tiger Fund, click here.
