Richmond captain Trent Cotchin is focusing on becoming a more damaging midfielder.

Cotchin has averaged 25.9 disposals per match in the Tigers’ seven games so far this season, and almost certainly would have racked up quite a few Brownlow Medal votes due to his strong inside midfield work.

But the dual Jack Dyer Medallist and midfield star is striving to improve his outside game, and kick more goals, in order to benefit the team.

“I feel that I’m still winning enough contested footy, but I’d love to get a little bit more free-flowing footy on the outside and, hopefully, hurt some teams on the scoreboard, as well,” Cotchin told Richmond great Matthew Richardson in an exclusive ‘Roar Vision’ interview.

“It’s okay to get your 20-25 touches, but when you become an elite midfielder, is what you see with the likes of Gary Ablett, who have a two or three possession chain that ends up inside 50, and probably a score assist as well.  

“It probably gets back to work-rate – seeing where the space is to run, accumulating the possessions, and making the most of them.

“My efficiency’s been down probably because of the nature of how I’ve been winning it (the ball).

“But, hopefully, I can become a little bit more free-flowing.

“It helps when your team’s up and about, and we’re winning a lot more of the ball than we have.

“And, you look at the all the good midfielders in the competition, and they kick goals.

“So, again, we want our team – ‘Dusty’ (Dustin Martin), ‘Lids’ (Brett Deledio), ‘Concs’ (Reece Conca) and ‘Jacko’ (Daniel Jackson), all impacting the scoreboard at some stage in the game, and I’ll, hopefully, be doing the same.”
