Richmond’s recruiting manager Francis Jackson took great pride in presenting the Club’s first draft pick in the 2012 National Draft, Nick Vlastuin, with the Cosgrove-Jenkins award, as the Tigers’ best first-year player, at last Monday night’s Jack Dyer Medal.
After detailing Vlastuin’s key football statistics for the year, Jackson was quick to point out that they didn’t tell the whole tale of the impact he had in his debut league season.
“He showed tremendous qualities in other areas . . . His fierce physical attack on the footy, his cool decision-making and efficient disposal under pressure, his courage to keep his eyes on the footy and contested situations, and his ability to simply get the job done – both on and off the field,” Jackson said.
Vlastuin was typically modest and thoughtful in his acceptance speech, even taking the time to thank the Club’s membership department . . .
“What a massive honor it is, to be up here, let alone wear the Richmond guernsey this year . . ,” he said.
“Thanks to the membership group for building such a great supporter base.
“I’ll never forget running out on to the ‘G’ in the elimination final against Carlton. That noise was deafening, and a little bit intimidating, even.
“To my teammates, thanks for all the advice and helping me develop this year.
“I can’t wait till next year . . .”
