The 22 players who ran out to represent Richmond in last Sunday’s elimination final are understandably still smarting from the 20-point loss.
However, the true force and impact of the Tiger Army, which made up the majority of the 94,690 fans at the MCG to witness the contest, was not lost to the players.
The likes of Trent Cotchin, Brett Deledio, Brandon Ellis, Alex Rance and Bachar Houli described the feeling of emerging from the rooms for the start of the game, and the pulsating opening moments, in a special Roar Vision video this week.
Houli played in front of some huge crowds during his time at Essendon, on big occasions like ANZAC Day, but described Sunday’s atmosphere as unlike anything he has experienced.
“It’s amazing the backing and the support we have from the Tiger Army,” Houli said.
“I’ve never, ever, experienced anything like it. I just love the support we get.”
Vice-captain Brett Deledio believes the players thrived off the noise of the Richmond fans in the minutes before the opening bounce.
“Running out onto the field and running down to the goal square, in our last warm-up, it was just electric,” he said.
“The hair on my arms were standing on end, and I couldn’t help but say to Jack (Riewoldt), ‘how good is this’!”
For talented 20-year-old Tiger Brandon Ellis, the experience was “awesome”.
“I’ll never, ever forget when we ran out through that banner. I’ve never heard a roar as loud as that before,” he said.
“It’s pretty scary. That was only one final. Imagine if we’re in a Grand Final – it would just be ridiculous.”
