Jacob Hopper will be hoping to emulate the achievements of two other Richmond recruits from rival League clubs who wore the Tigers’ No. 2 guernsey.
Hopper spent his first two seasons at Tigerland, after being traded by Greater Western Sydney, in the No.22 guernsey but has now been given the No. 2 vacated by triple premiership star defender Dylan Grimes.
It was the number Hopper wore throughout his 114-game career with the Giants.
Ian Stewart and Darren Gaspar were given Richmond’s No. 2 when they arrived at the Club from St Kilda and Sydney respectively.
Both those players went on to have superb careers with the Tigers.
Stewart, a brilliant centreman, won a Brownlow Medal (his third overall) and the Jack Dyer Medal in his 1971 debut season at the Club. Two years later, he was a pivotal member of Richmond’s 1973 premiership.
He packed plenty into his 78 games for the Tigers and subsequently was selected in the Club’s Team of the 20th Century.
Gaspar, a star defender, also won a Jack Dyer Medal and was a dual All Australian representative during his 207-game career with Richmond.
